While on out way home from the coast of Oregon and in the middle of the mountains we stopped at a rest area. When starting to leave the vehicle wouldn't start, called our towing service who took us to Wilsonville Auto Care in Wilsonville Oregon being after hours the wrecker driver called ahead and the owner (manager) ? told him where to drop the motorhome, the next morning the same person told me that they charged $100 an hour for changing out the starter. Which I accepted, the mechanic came in late and was upset he had to work on the motorhome, I told him I was sure it was the starter so he went under and looked it over then proceeded to tell me that he would charge extra to bolt the drive-shaft back up, at the hourly rate I figured maybe 15 to 20 minutes then he put a new starter in, at the most he spent no more than 1 hour working on the whole project, the manager, owner (?) came over and he rode back to the shop with me he took my registration with him to get numbers off the motorhome (he said) Any way he worked up the bill and presented it I told him that it was too high, that he had told me $100 an hour plus parts, he said that was the cost, he charged me$329.05 for labor and $249 for the starter, I was livid but knew in order to get out of there I had to pay, I used credit card and left...Upon reaching home I checked at three different shops the highest estimate for the same starter and the labor was $168 lowest was $152, I called NAPA to get retail cost on starter (he was also a NAPA dealer) they quoted $58.00 for the starter, is there any recourse ??? oh yes I also called the credit card co. but since I had signed for it I had no recourse there.Oh yes I am disabled with heart condition and cannot get under the vehicle, my wife cannot do that kind of work. The hours to do this job call for 1 hour. starter model # RAY2465022 is the replacement model at NAPA ( the one they put in is $37.49 w/ $16.50 core cost.
